Flashcards Apps Teach Kids to Recognize Animals and Colors

Word SLapPs, with only the pre-loaded data, may not seem extremely impressive at first glance.  The full version, which is $2.99, comes loaded with Animals and Colors which are used in a flashcard game.  There are three levels of difficulty, each one displaying a different number of cards.  (Level one displays one card, level two displays two cards, and level three displays three cards.)

Flashcards apps like this one usually have several difficulty levels.  I would recommend using Level one with low functioning children with autism, since there is only one picture on the screen, so not much deliberation is required.  The animals included are the ape, bird, cat, turtle, zebra, chicken, cow, dog, donkey, tiger, rhino, and squirrel.  The colors included are black, blue, brown, green, grey, orange, pink, purple, red, white, yellow, and peach.

Why Is This App $4.99?  There Must Be More To It …

While I’m sure that colors and animals will entertain autistic children for a fairly long time, the key to this iPad app is its ability to be customized.  Under settings, which is located on the top left of the iPad screen, there are a multitude of options that you can change.  Next to these options (in a white cloud) is a button that says “Edit / Add Content.”  Click on this and you will be given the option to create a new folder.  In subsequent prompts you will be asked to upload your own pictures and recorded sounds or questions.

For example, if you want your child to learn about different fruits and vegetables, you would acquire pictures of all of the desired objects.  Then you would create a folder and record yourself saying, “tap the ___.”  You would associate that sound byte with the correct fruit so that your child would hear the request and tap the corresponding picture out of a group of up to three pictures.  This is a great iPad app for teaching children on the ASD spectrum, and the true worth of flashcards apps like this one lies in its ability to be customized.
