Apps for Touch: A Unique Way to Teach TouchScreen Concept

Apps for touch are usually straightforward; touch the correct picture and get rewarded.  Touch Trainer does not teach about identifying specific items, but instead teaches a concept: use of touchscreen technology.

This iPad application helps children develop better reasoning skills by sending them through a series of challenges, which increase in difficulty gradually.  The app contains seven different levels, and how long it takes to progress from each level can be varied in the settings, which come up as soon as the application is opened.  I recommend setting the “reinforcement length” to one second, but you can judge this for yourself according to your child’s preferences.

Touch Trainer: Gameplay and Different Levels

As I said before, there are seven levels in Touch Trainer.  The first consists of a small picture in the middle of the iPad screen.  The entire screen is covered in color, and there is a small square in the center.  If your child touches in any area which is colored, the reinforcement sequence plays and the user racks up a “correct touch.”

In the settings function, located on the home screen of the app, the number of correct touches needed to progress to the next level can be modified.  The amount of screen covered in color decreases with each level, so your child needs to learn that in order for the reinforcement sequence to be played, he must tap within the colored area.

By the time they reach the last level of Touch Trainer, a child on the autism spectrum will be able to tap one of several icons located randomly on the screen and know which reinforcement sequence to expect based on the shape they have touched.

This app takes a different and unique approach to teaching children with autism, and succeeds in doing so.
