Learn To Spell Animals The Easy Way

There are dozens of animals with concise, short names.  Ant, pig, cow, rat, and hippopotamus bat are just a few examples of this.  First Words: Animals takes advantage of this fact and helps children with autism improve their spelling skills by providing a simple game in which users drag letters to their corresponding spots.  Great for improving fine motor skills, too!

For example, my iPhone is currently displaying the word “ant.”  Below the word are the letters “a”, “n”, and “t”, but more scrambled than the eggs I had for breakfast.  Your child needs only to drag them into the correct spot in order to hear the sound that that animal makes.  (Yes, the ant makes a sound.)

First Words: Animals Options and Such

On the home page of First Words: Animals, there are three buttons:  Play, Options, and More Games.  Play brings you straight to the game, I’ll talk about Options in a second, and More Games brings you to other games created by the same developers.

In the Options tab, there are a couple of important things and many unimportant things.  You should think about the difference between the application saying Letters or Phonics, and should pay attention to the Longest Word setting.

Deluxe and Professional Versions Available

There is a version called FirstWords: Deluxe which costs $4.99 and uses the same concept but with 174 words, including vehicles, colors, shapes, animals, and words from around the house, e.g. fun, run, hit, cry, etc.

Are you a teacher or speech pathologist?  Then, you might be interested in reading our review of First Words: Professional, which contains even more words – up to 350!  The Pro app also allows list and word management, so you can hide words and lists that you don’t want your student to see at any given time.  For example, you can make list of only short words, long words, or words that practice a particular letter sound.  All these options for $9.99!

Who’s Behind Autism Plugged In?

My name is Jack Kieffer and I'm a blogger sharing my love of technology at blogs like Cool Gizmo Toys, Greenamajigger, and here at Autism Plugged In where I'm trying to make a difference in the lives of children with autism.

Several years ago, I began volunteering with special needs kids, who gave me much joy and an appreciation for life. This blog is my way of giving back. Any proceeds from this effort are used to support my friends with autism. Read more about Jack or connect with him on Facebook, Twitter, or LinkedIn.
