Top 8 Storybook iPad Apps For Children With Autism

This list of the Top 8 Storybook iPad Apps for Children With Autism is a compilation I created by searching online and reading reviews from app reviewers and from parents of children with special needs.  All of these apps function on the iPad, but if you don’t have one, don’t fret!  Many of the apps shown here can also be downloaded onto the iPhone or iTouch.

Each application includes a short description as well as a link in the title.  This link either goes to a review that I have done previously or to iTunes so that you may get a more in-depth look at the application.  Overall, I think that this list will help you guys a lot, and I hope you and your kids can enjoy some of these apps together!

Don’t forget: if you like this post, share it!

Speech With Milo Storybook iPad App

The Speech With Milo Storybook iPad Application is compatible with the iPhone and iTouch in addition to being an iPad app, so those of you who I mentioned earlier can jump for joy!

I’m not going to give away too much about this app, since the link goes to an extensive review that I’ve recently written, but the application is $1.99, one of the less expensive storybook apps, and tells an adorable story with lovable characters that will easily engage your child.  There are also interactive elements to this application – animals and items make sound when you tap on them.

Additionally, like many of the apps on this list, you can have the book read to you or you can turn off the voice and read the book on your own.  This is purely preference, and is often dependent on where your child is on the spectrum.

Sparky The Shark Storybook App

storybook apps for children with autism

Sparky the Shark – Fun Interactive Kids Storybook – for iPhone tells a funny story, and has artwork that kids on all levels of the spectrum will love.  Unfortunately, as you can see in the screenshot, some of the language is more sophisticated than kids on the spectrum will understand.

This is still a great app, except that you will need to read the story to them, or just let them look at the pictures.  Encourage them ask questions if they don’t know something.  To be honest, I feel like there will be many kids who really could care less about reading the story and would rather just browse the wonderfully drawn pictures, some of which make you chuckle even when not paired with the text.

So, don’t be discouraged by some of the harder words in the Sparky The Shark Storybook App!  This app is $.99, and has a similar version available for iPad Sparky the Shark – A Frighteningly Funny Adventure HD – Biscuit Interactive.

This is one of the most promising storybook apps on this list, and it costs just $4.99, and works on all platforms.  (iPad, iTouch, iPhone.)

The When You Grow Up – a you’re-in-the-story book! by Stepworks puts your child right into the story!  In addition to having tons of cool sounds and animations, this storybook application lets you crop a picture of your child’s face, and then uses it in the entire story while it gives fun ideas of what you might become when you grow up.

The Smurfs Movie Storybook – Children’s Book by zuuka incorporated is a great combination of reading out loud and stills from the movie.  The story is exciting, lengthy, and sure to keep kids engaged.  The application also has several fun mini games that can be reached from the main menu in addition to the actual story!

This great storybook applications is $2.99 and is compatible with the iPad, iTouch, and iPhone.

Languages: English, French, German, Spanish

$1.99 – Morotobi’s Adventure Storybook App

storybook app for children with autism

Morotobi’s Adventure HD by Tinrobot is a great storybook app for children with autism, but I need to warn you about one thing.  Though this app tells a great story and has cute characters, there are also a couple of scenes that may appear disconcerting to the more easily frightened children – it’s not terribly scary, but scenes such as the one shown above may be construed as unsettling to some children with autism.

I just know that some children react differently than others, so if your child is scared very easily, this probably isn’t the app for you.  You can always preview it first and decide for yourself.

For other, less fragile children who pretend to be monsters (you know who you are) this app is sure to be a home run!

Morotobi’s adventure is only $1.99!  And works on only the iPad.

Languages: English, Korean
