How to Keep Kids on Task?  It’s All Routine

Keeping children on task and on schedule can be a real challenge. Visual Routine, an autism app created by Proteon Software, allows parents and teachers to create schedules with text only, images only, or both. Users can tailor it to each child by using familiar pictures, audio, and text.

Let’s take a look at what’s new in this recently updated version (2.5).

Create Visual Routines With Familiar Steps

Autistic and other special needs children thrive on routines and schedules. It helps them prepare for the next task and know what to expect.

Visual Routines lets kids see their own, customized schedules for say, “Getting Ready for Lunch.” You might help them create a routine that shows steps for getting ready.  You could include pictures of their own lunch boxes, the cafeteria they eat in, and friends they eat with. This helps them become familiar and comfortable with the task and actually look forward to it.

Customize It

Parents and teachers can add their own pictures along with their own text. This helps the kids recognize their personalized settings and to determine which tasks come next.

Some teachers use the Picture Exchange Communication (PECs) where a schedule may be printed out and laminated for a classroom. This app allows mobility and customization for each child, making it easier for both the teachers and children.

Once all the pictures and steps are added, the routine might look similar to the next image. Parents or teachers can also embed different choices within a step.

So, if you’re constantly wondering about “how to keep kids on task,” this app might be just the answer you’re looking for!
