Learn Cursive Writing The Fun (and Efficient) Way!
Write On Handwriting apps never disappoint! (You can check out our review of their Printing app as well.)
The Write On Handwriting: Conquering Cursive Letters and Numbers app is, like all of this developer’s apps, well-built and well-thought out.
Everything within the app is designed to be conducive to learning, but it is done in a way that creates a fun and rewarding environment for the user! After all, how are we supposed to engage with the material and form new connections in our brains if we aren’t having a good time?
Learn Letters in Groups: Topic Reinforcement
When the app first opens, users will see a bright and visually-appealing image of three beach balls sitting in the sand next to a palm tree. The first of these three beach balls has capital cursive letters on it, the second has lowercase cursive letters on it, and the third shows the numbers 1, 2, and 3.
These are the three different topics that the Conquering Cursive Letters and Numbers application covers; there are individual sections for capital cursive letters, lowercase cursive letters, and numbers!
Tapping on any of these three brings you to another page. The new page lists the different “sections” that the letters fall into.
For example, capital letters are broken down into “Curve,” “Dive Down,” “Valley,” “Handle 1,” and more! These names refer to the fine motor techniques that are needed to write these letters (i.e. are there a lot of curves, reverses, dips, etc.)
Learning To Write Cursive With Directional Arrows!
When writing letters within Conquering Cursive, kids will be:
- Verbally told how to write the letter (audio instructions)
- Then, arrows will appear on the letter’s outline that show how the letter should be written
- Blue arrows indicate that the line is being drawn anew in the forward direction (it is not being re-traced)
- Green arrows mean that kids need to go back the way that they came!
Drag the yellow star along the letter in order to get the exciting positive feedback sequence (a lot of stars in this one!)
Kids can change their pen color by tapping the crayons on the bottom right of the page, and completed lessons are marked with a yellow smiley face on the lessons page.
Learn Mode and Practice Mode
On the bottom right of this cursive writing app, there is an octopus icon above the words “Learn” and “Practice.”
The “Learn” mode is where the app gives directions on how to write the letter and provides kids with arrows.
The “Practice” mode allows for more unstructured work with a single letter – if users are unable to write the letter after a certain number of tries in Practice mode, then the arrows show up and help to guide kids along! (Both modes provide appropriate feedback.)
Cursive Writing App: Improves Fine Motor Skills
Overall, Write On Handwriting: Conquering Cursive Letters and Numbers is an excellent app! Frankly, I can’t think of a better application for teaching kids cursive writing!
I would recommend this iPad app to parents and teachers who work with higher-motor-functioning special needs children. (Get printing down pat with Write-On Handwriting’s first app, and then start working on your cursive!)
And, even if you are not a big cursive fan, this is undoubtedly a great way to improve fine motor skills in general, making other everyday tasks a bit easier for kids!
