Fun with Phonics
If you want children to learn how to write and spell, give them cans of shaving cream or some maple syrup and let them have at it!
Thinking outside the box is just what Fizzbrain did with their new Touch and Write Phonics app, which is reminiscent of their other Touch and Write applications.
This app teaches children about vowels, blends, diagraphs, and trigraphs, and lets them use ketchup, shaving cream, cookie dough, or paint to trace each item.
This app is great for special needs and autistic kids who love tactile learning. Although it’s virtual, the visuals and sounds still get them excited – as if they were spraying shaving cream in real life! (Minus the mess, which is great for parents!)
So Much to Learn
Children can learn about vowels, blends, diagraphs, and create their own word lists. When they tap on a category, they can select “Learn About” to listen to a description of the category and to see examples.
They can then select an interactive lesson where they get to trace a vowel, for example. The idea of this activity is for the monster to eat the cupcakes while users trace. This ensures that the child understands the correct way to trace letters! (Directionally speaking – which lines are made first, etc.)
They can choose from 18 different writing textures that come with real sounds!
When a child chooses to practice blends, they’ll see a screen like the example below. They can then tap the different blends and move them around.
Along with learning about phonics, kids will build up the fine motor skills that are necessary for writing. The app engages them and keeps their attention while users learn phonics, spelling, and even writing!
Parents can create lists for the words that their kids need to learn. For example, you could create a list called “animals” and select all the words related to animals.
Kids can also choose from different types of paper to draw on, and these little details really help keep kids engaged.
Why wouldn’t writing with cookie dough, shaving cream, and maple syrup be fun? I think this app is going to be a favorite among kids learning about phonics because it’s so engaging and is just plain exciting!
