App: Toonia Cardcreator
Create Emotional Connections
Relationships don’t always come naturally to children on the Autism spectrum. Toonia Cardcreator iPad app lets children aged 4 and up express themselves creatively while building important emotional connections.
Cardcreator is a greeting card and invitation making app. Beautiful, graphic cards can be created for birthdays, holidays, shout outs, and any time a connection is desired.
There are four main card themes: Happy Birthday, Get Well Soon, Summertime, and School Days.
The ability to delete and add images and background colors takes card possibilities beyond the preset themes. This is a sleeper app whose creative potential is revealed more and more with every use.
Toonia Cardcreator Characters Mirror Emotions
Once a theme is selected, the child drags and drops cute cartoon characters, accessories, and backgrounds from a slider at the bottom of the screen. The ability to change a character’s facial expression and body language is more than an entertaining feature for users with ASD. It gives them a chance to connect a feeling to their card.
Once the images are in place, a message can be typed onto the card. The child can sign his own name for the final, personalized touch.
Toonia Cardcreator App Features

Background music is low key and cannot be turned off.
While the Toonia Cardcreator website says there are no in-app purchases, there is an icon on the home page that leads directly to the App Store. A short instructional video is available on YouTube:
Kid Testing Toonia Cardcreator
Both my children love this app! The entire family, grown-ups included, had difficulty with the delete image function at first. Completing the circular motion felt awkward, but we each conquered it in our own way and gained some manual dexterity in the process. My daughter, Clara (8, Autism, Down Syndrome), had no problem with any other fine motor aspects of Toonia Cardcreator.
She seemed eager to make a card for Miss Jane, her running buddy. Since Clara is non-verbal and doesn’t react emotionally to a lot of things, I loved seeing her getting excited about making something for someone who cares so much about her. My TD 6 year old has a list of people he is making cards for, “just because.”
